  • Too high of a concentration = loading/glazing
  • Too high of a concentration = Increased honing force needed, reduced removal rate, broken tooling
  • Too low of a concentration = Good removal rate, but the tool will wear out prematurely
  • Long, stringy chips need larger chip clearance, so low concentration is needed
  • Small chips (cast iron or carbide) processing allows for a higher concentration
  • Need a balance of good free-cutting action with cost effective tool life
