Stroke Honing Surface Finish And Texture

                       Honing Textures/Surface Finishes

  • Honing can generate a “Peak” parameter, normally measured as an Ra value. (roughness average).  Simple single step honing.

  • There are some Honing applications that require a multi-step/process that is called “Plateau” Finishing.  This is normally measured in the Rk Series Values.  Rpk (peaks), Rk (core roughness), Rvk (valley depth). This requires an aggressive roughing operation that generates deep scratches, followed by a finishing operation that removes most of the peaks but leaves the valleys.  This determines the amount of “plateau” or contact area the processed part allows.  Oil is retained in the grooves and the plateau provides bearing surface.

                               Plateau Surface

  • Plateau honing with fine stones removes the peaks and leaves the valleys for oil retention.
